2023 International Michael Chekhov Workshop

Since incorporating in 1999, MICHA has offered training and support to thousands of dedicated professional actors, directors, choreographers, performers, scholars and teachers from around the world. Each year, MICHA assembles for a week of intensive study and exchange in Michael Chekhov’s Technique. Artists new to the Chekhov work are welcome to attend.

Tuition: $1,375, including meals ($100 due upon registration)

Participants will take part in a class on Sunday evening, followed by five full days of training, including a morning warm up and Voice Intensive, Chekhov Fundamentals in the afternoon, and Directing in the evening, where participants will either study directing or will engage as performers.

OVERVIEW:

Morning: Chekhov inspired warm-up and voice intensive

Lunchtime: dialogue with senior teachers and practitioners

Afternoon: exploration and application of the fundamentals of Chekhov’s Technique

Evening: new-play lab with Ellie Heyman, for actors and directors

Special events are programmed throughout the week and include festival performances, time to explore MICHA’s library and archive, as well as the option for participants to share their field of practice-based research.

Five Guiding Principles- July 2023

CHEKHOV'S FIVE GUIDING PRINCIPLES with Jessica Cerullo, Sinéad Rushe, and Fern Sloan

Cost $400; if you have taken this workshop before, you may retake it for $150.
Michael Chekhov’s technique is an imaginative approach to experiencing the truth of the moment. In On Theatre and the Art of Acting, a series of lectures given to a group of professional actors in 1955, Chekhov speaks of Five Guiding Principles.
This online workshop, held over four days, will explore those principles using recordings of the lectures, practical application, and discussion. You must be a MICHA member to take this course.

Olivier Award-winning director Phelim McDermott talks about ensemble and how he incorporates Michael Chekhov’s Technique into the staging of his productions. Join Phelim in an intimate studio setting with MICHA’s Artistic Director, Jessica Cerullo, as they speak about vulnerability in the rehearsal room and the qualities of movement on stage. You’ll learn about all things Improbable, Phelim's upcoming production of The Hours at the Metropolitan Opera, and his award winning production of My Neighbour Totoro, as well as observe him in collaboration with actors from the MICHA community.
