Joanna Merlin Professional Artists Initiative Presents:

CHEKHOV TECHNIQUE ESSENTIALS FOR DIRECTORS & ACTORS

“What I love most about Chekhov’s approach is the way he hot-wires the
actor’s imagination to the very soul of the character, and in fact, the actor.”

-Michael Mayer
Multiple Tony Award-Winning Director

This 2-day workshop will enable directors to apply Chekhov’s Techniques – from the analysis and preparation of scripts to effective communication, in the moment, on set, with actors – in a way that is visceral, instinctive, and activating.

Actors will learn the Chekhov Fundamentals and explore their collaborative process in working with directors.

DAY ONE: EMBODYING THE FUNDAMENTALS
Directors and actors will work together as an ensemble to learn the basic tools of the Chekhov Technique using the text from a TV or film script to practice application.

DAY TWO: APPROACHING THE SCRIPT
Directors will have an opportunity to direct a scene with actors on camera, using the fundamentals from Day One. The MICHA team will work with directors to prep the material and provide coaching.

MICHA FACULTY
MICHA Founder Joanna Merlin will open the workshop, which will be led by actress and MICHA faculty member Bethany Caputo and director and teaching artist Ellie Heyman.
