It all began when Joanna Merlin was a young actress in Hollywood where she studied with Michael Chekhov for five years in the 1950’s as a member of his acting studio. His teachings and philosophy so profoundly impacted her that she became an acting teacher herself, amid her successful dual careers as an actress and casting director, founding MICHA in 1999. For twenty-five years MICHA was central to her life and a source of great joy and creative fulfillment. At the time of her death, Joanna was Chekhov’s last living student.

MICHA’s Board of Directors honored Joanna in 2023 with the creation of the Joanna Merlin Professional Artist Initiative and Theater of the Future Fellowship in recognition of her enduring contribution to the performing arts. The Initiative is focused on bringing the Chekhov Technique to directors, writers, and actors working in professional theatre, television, and film. “Joanna’s passion for the work and her commitment to introducing new and up-and-coming talent to the technique has been the heart and soul of MICHA,” says Jessica Cerullo, MICHA’s Artistic Director.

“It’s fitting that this initiative honors her and Chekhov’s belief that the theater of the future hinges on the dynamic relationship between the director, playwright, actor, and the play. We’re excited to see the fruits it will bear.”
